Trees For Schools
Education Presentations

Trees For Houston has had an educational program that it presents to third and fourth grade classes. The interactive presentations focus not only on tree biology, but the value and criticality of planting and protecting trees in our environment. With the support of Devon Energy, our elementary school presentations include a "Growing Together" kit. The kits are hands-on learning tools, which include seeds, potting soil, growing containers, rulers, measurement charts, and recycled pencils for the students. Devon's generous donation has helped us reach thousands of students.

Lessons and Activities:
Trees
Our Trees For Schools program was developed to provide and plant much needed trees on Houston area school campuses. Providing far more than shadier sidewalks, this program has fostered a sense of pride and cooperation both in the students and in their surrounding communities. Participating schools are identified and selected based on recommendations from parents, teachers, principals and district administrators. Once the candidate school has been selected, the campus grounds are surveyed in order to determine both the adequate number and appropriate species of trees that should be installed. As with all Trees For Houston plantings, the trees are maintained and monitored by our organization for two years to ensure survival.
Averaging about 25 campuses a year since 1994, we have planted over 800 trees. These trees foster pride and cooperation in the students and their community.

Urban ForesTree Keeper
The Urban ForesTree Keeper (UFTK) is a tree-care course offered each fall. It teaches basic horticultural principles: tree identification, planting techniques, site selection, basic landscape design and how to start projects in your neighborhood.
Through this course, we furnish knowledgeable people who will as owners or volunteers care for trees in municipalities, school districts, neighborhoods, and yards.
The classes consist of 6 hours of classroom instruction and one tree identification morning at Hermann Park. After you have completed the course, we ask that you are a co-leader at our volunteer plantings or community outreach events. The cost is $20 and includes a t-shirt, 1-3 gallon native tree and manual. You will receive a certificate of completion in May at our Annual Meeting to be certified as an Urban ForesTree Keeper.
