History

Founded in 1982 as the Live Oak Society, Trees For Houston expanded to plant, protect, and promote all of Houston urban forest.  We grew as our city grew.  We have worked  to see that trees shade neighborhoods, clean air, beautify streets, and slow runoff.

Carroll Shaddock and Bill Coats had the vision – the shovels, energy, and dedication to get us established. Their start has been the foundation for the efforts and generosity of citizens, companies, cities, and charities.

This tradition is vibrant today, with projects ranging Bush Airport to the Port of Houston, from the Energy Corridor to White Oak Bayou, from the Kinkaid School to Texas Southern University.

Purpose

Our mission at Trees For Houston is to plant, promote and protect trees all over the greater Houston area.

This simple purpose has a variety of facets.

We engage our neighbors as volunteers in many of our projects.

We teach them about trees at their schools and in our classes.

We help honor them by establishing tribute groves where trees may be dedicated to another.

We talk to them through their other clubs, churches, companies, and associations.

Constituents

Our constituency is as wide as the area people travel in their daily lives, as narrow as the seedling a child helps plant at his school, and as diverse as the people from Conroe to Friendswood and Katy to Baytown.
