2010-2011 Season
With the help of our partners and volunteers, Trees For Houston planted 41,984 trees this year throughout the greater Houston region.
Reforestation
In late November, Enbridge volunteers planted thousands of seedlings to reforest San Jacinto State Park. Volunteers planted one-gallon trees to combat soil erosion and house wildlife.
Parks, Parkways and Bayous
We planted over 10,000 trees in parks, parkways and bayous. At our 2011 Arbor Day Celebration in January we planted 2,011 trees with the help of hundreds of volunteers at Pecan Park in La Porte. Throughout our 28 years, our principal plantings have been of street trees. We put them along everything from Interstate Highways to neighborhood lanes. Trees For Houston worked with the Green Median Committee to plant hundreds of trees down medians on 1960.
Schools
Nearly 450 public and private schools have over 8,000 trees thanks to our Trees For Schools. This year, we planted 1,570 trees at 39 schools.
Civic Partners
Trees For Houston planted 24,476 trees with green partners such as the cities of Houston, Kemah, La Porte and Missouri City as well as Houston Parks Board, Buffalo Bayou Partnership, Hermann Park Conservancy and various management districts.
Gifts of Trees
In addition to planting trees, we also gave nearly 558 seedlings at events from the Heights Urban Forestry Day to the KBR Earth Day Awareness.
Education
Trees For Houston reaches out to third and fourth grade students to teach them about the importance of trees. We discuss the benefits of trees and the basic biology of a tree. Thanks to Devon Energy, Trees For Houston is able to reach out to over 2,000 students each year and provide them with a Growing Together Kit. This kit includes a planting card, tree seed and ruler, recycled pencil and worksheet for the students.
